Glossary of Terms<\/span><\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

To make your time with us easier, we have compiled a list of terms we commonly use in the orthotics and prosthetics world. We hope that this will be helpful to you as you embark on this challenge.<\/p>\n\n

Amputation<\/h4>\n

The surgical removal of all or part of a limb due to disease or injury<\/p>\n\n

AE Amputee<\/h4>\n\n

Above-elbow, or transhumeral, amputee<\/p>\n

AK Amputee<\/h4>\n\n

Above-knee, or transfemoral, amputee<\/p>\n

BE Amputee<\/h4>\n\n

Below-elbow, or transradial, amputee<\/p>\n

BK Amputee<\/h4>\n\n

Below-knee, or transtibial, amputee<\/p>\n

Bilateral Limb<\/h4>\n\n

Loss involving two limbs.<\/p>\n

Body image<\/h4>\n\n

Awareness and perception of one\u2019s body related to both appearance and function<\/p>\n

Chopart<\/h4>\n\n<\/p>Also known as a partial foot amputation

\n

Congenital Limb Deficiency<\/h4>\n\n

An absent, shortened or abnormal limb present at birth<\/p>\n

Disarticulation<\/h4>\n\n

Amputation through the joint \u2013 i.e., hip, wrist, shoulder, knee, etc.<\/p>\n

Extremity<\/h4>\n\n

Relating to arm or leg<\/p>\n

Gait<\/h4>\n\n

Referring to the manner or style of walking.<\/p>\n

Hip Disarticulation<\/h4>\n\n

Amputation of entire lower limb at hip level, or ischial tuberosity, also called the ischial bone or ischium; located in the pelvis and used for weight-bearing<\/p>\n

Lower extremity (LE)<\/h4>\n\n

Relating to the leg<\/p>\n

Myoelectric<\/h4>\n\n

Type of upper extremity prosthesis that uses biofeedback to control the function<\/p>\n

Orthosis\/ Orthotic<\/h4>\n\n

A brace\/device that is used to straighten and provide support to a limb or the spine (plural: orthoses)<\/p>\n

Orthotist<\/h4>\n\n

One who fits braces and devices designed to straighten or support extremities\/spine.<\/p>\n

Partial Foot<\/h4>\n\n

Amputation through any part of the foot leaving the ankle intact.<\/p>\n

PFFD Proximal Femoral Focal Deficiency<\/h4>\n\n

Shortened femur bone<\/p>\n

Preprioception<\/h4>\n\n

A sense of the location\/orientation of one\u2019s limb in space.<\/p>\n

Prosthesis\/ Prosthetic<\/h4>\n\n

An artificial replacement for a body part (plural: prostheses)<\/p>\n

Prosthetist<\/h4>\n\n

One who fits and makes prostheses.<\/p>\n

Quadrilateral<\/h4>\n\n

Limb loss involving four limbs<\/p>\n\n

Residual Limb<\/h4>\n\nDescription of remaining limb from joint to amputation site\n\n

Socket<\/h4>\n\n

Part of the prosthesis that encapsulates the residual limb<\/p>\n\n

Symes<\/h4>\n\n

Amputation through the ankle<\/p>\n\n

Transpelvic<\/h4>\n\n

Amputation of entire lower limb, plus a portion of the pelvic bone; may also be referred to as a hemipelvectomy<\/p>\n\n

Trilateral<\/h4>\n\n

Limb loss involving three limbs<\/p>\n\n

Upper extremity (UE)<\/h4>\n\n

Relating to the arm<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t
